  • How to Properly Handle Excess Refrigerant in Chillers: A Step-by-Step Guide Aug 22, 2025
In the daily operation and maintenance of industrial chillers, various issues may arise. One common problem is excessive refrigerant charge, which not only affects the efficiency of the industrial chiller but can also lead to equipment malfunctions, increased energy consumption, and higher maintenance costs. So, what should be done when it is determined that a industrial chiller has been overcharged with refrigerant? In this article, we’ll provide a detailed guide on how to handle this issue properly.   Step 1: Confirm the Excess Refrigerant To determine if the industrial chiller has an excessive amount of refrigerant, use a pressure gauge to check the high and low pressures. Once confirmed, turn off the industrial chiller’s power to ensure safe operation and prevent any accidental restarts during the process.   Step 2: Wear Protective Equipment Before starting, make sure to wear protective gloves, goggles, and other safety gear to avoid refrigerant contact with your skin and eyes. Additionally, inspect the surrounding area for any potential fire hazards and ensure good ventilation in the operating environment.   Step 3: Release the Excess Refrigerant To safely release the refrigerant, specialized tools and techniques are required. For example, using recovery equipment, you can transfer the excess refrigerant into a storage container. During the refrigerant release process, it’s crucial to follow environmental regulations to avoid releasing refrigerants directly into the atmosphere, which could contribute to environmental pollution. Also, monitor system parameters such as pressure and temperature to determine when the refrigerant charge reaches the correct level. When the system pressure is within the normal operating range, it indicates that the refrigerant has been properly adjusted, and you can stop the recovery process.   Step 4: Restart the Chiller and Monitor Performance Once the refrigerant has been properly released, restart the chiller and observe key operational parameters, such as pressure, temperature, and current. This ensures that the chiller is running smoothly. Additionally, verify that the cooling effect meets the desired performance standards. If any issues arise, shut down the chiller immediately and perform further inspections and troubleshooting.   Important Notes on Refrigerant Handling It’s essential to note that handling and adjusting refrigerant levels should only be performed by qualified technicians to ensure safety and accuracy. During routine maintenance or repairs, always adhere to the chiller’s technical specifications and requirements for refrigerant charging to avoid overcharging or undercharging.   By following these detailed steps and precautions, you can effectively resolve the issue of excess refrigerant in water cooled chiller and air cooled chiller, allowing your equipment to return to stable and reliable operation. • Water Quality Requirements for Industrial Water Cooled Chillers Sep 11, 2025
Water cooled chillers are essential equipment in the refrigeration industry, widely used in industrial production and commercial buildings. Water chillers are primarily composed of a compressor, condenser, evaporator, and expansion valve, working together in a refrigeration cycle to transfer heat and achieve cooling effects. In industrial production, water-cooled chillers precisely control process temperatures; in commercial buildings, they create a comfortable indoor environment.   However, the stable operation of a water-cooled chiller is closely related to water quality. Proper water quality is crucial for its efficient operation and extended lifespan. 1. pH Level The ideal pH range for water is between 6.5 and 8.5. Water with a pH below 6.5 is acidic and can corrode the chiller’s metal components. Water with a pH above 8.5 is alkaline and can lead to scaling, which affects the chiller's performance.   2. Water Hardness Water hardness is another critical factor. The total hardness should not exceed 200mg/L (calculated as calcium carbonate). High hardness levels can lead to the formation of scale, reducing cooling efficiency, increasing energy consumption, and even causing blockages in the pipes.   3. Turbidity Turbidity should be kept below 5 NTU. Higher turbidity can cause suspended particles to wear down equipment, clog filters, and reduce heat exchange efficiency.   4. Microorganisms Microbial content must also be carefully monitored. Excessive microbial growth can result in biological slime buildup, which corrodes equipment, decreases heat exchange efficiency, and causes blockages in pipes.   High quality water is crucial for the optimal performance of a water cooled chiller. Hengde, with its extensive experience in refrigeration equipment development and production, offers water cooled chillers that not only deliver excellent cooling performance but also consider water quality compatibility. We provide comprehensive water quality treatment advice and equipment maintenance plans, helping industries meet their cooling needs efficiently and reliably. Hengde has earned a strong reputation in the refrigeration market for its high-quality products and services.   Choose Hengde, Choose Perfect Chillers!
  • Water Chiller vs Air Conditioner: What’s the Difference? Jun 12, 2026
When people hear the words “cooling equipment,” they often think that water chillers and air conditioners work in the same way. In fact, they both use refrigeration cycles involving compressors, condensers, evaporators, and refrigerants. However, their design purposes, cooling methods, and application scenarios are very different.   Different Purposes: Cooling Processes vs Cooling People The biggest difference is what they are designed to cool. Air conditioners are mainly designed to control the temperature and humidity of indoor spaces, creating a comfortable environment for people. A typical office, home, or shopping mall uses an air conditioning system to lower the indoor temperature by directly cooling the surrounding air.   A water chiller, on the other hand, is mainly designed for industrial processes. It removes heat from machines, molds, reactors, lasers, food processing equipment, and other production systems by circulating chilled water or other cooling fluids.   Hengde Unique Insight:A factory may still need a powerful industrial chiller even when the workshop itself feels cool. The purpose of a chiller is not to make people comfortable, but to keep the production process within a stable temperature range.   Cooling Capacity and Continuous Operation Air conditioners are usually designed based on human comfort requirements and normal daily operation. They often work with changing indoor temperatures and may stop or reduce capacity after reaching the target temperature.   Industrial water chillers are designed to handle large and continuous heat loads. In many factories, chillers operate 24 hours a day, maintaining accurate water temperatures to ensure product quality and stable production.   Hengde Unique Insight: In industrial applications, temperature fluctuations of just a few degrees may affect product quality. For example, in injection molding, unstable mold temperatures can cause dimensional deviations, surface defects, and longer production cycles.   Installation and System Design Differences An air conditioner usually forms an independent cooling system for a room. Installation is relatively simple, and its main goal is to regulate air temperature.   Industrial chillers are often integrated into production lines. They may be connected with molds, extrusion machines, reactors, laser machines, or other equipment through pipelines to create a closed-loop cooling system.   Hengde Unique Insight: Many first-time users try to compare industrial chillers with large commercial air conditioners because both have compressors and fans. However, the key difference is not the appearance of the equipment but the stability, water temperature control accuracy, and ability to handle process heat.   Which One Should You Choose? If your goal is to improve the comfort of a workspace, an air conditioner is the correct choice. If your production equipment generates heat and requires stable temperature control, an industrial water chiller is the professional solution. Choosing the wrong cooling system may not only reduce efficiency but also affect product quality and increase operating costs.   How Hengde Can Help Hengde specializes in the design and manufacturing of industrial water chillers with more than 20 years of experience in temperature control technology. Our air cooled chillers and water cooled chillers are widely applied in injection molding, extrusion, chemical processing, laser equipment, food production, and many other industrial production lines. • Industrial Chiller vs Cooling Tower: What's the Difference? Jul 24, 2026
When planning a cooling system for a manufacturing plant, one question comes up repeatedly: "Should I install an industrial chiller or a cooling tower?" Although both are designed to remove heat from industrial processes, they serve very different purposes. Many first-time buyers assume they are interchangeable because both deal with circulating water, but that's one of the most common misunderstandings in industrial cooling.   The right choice depends on what your production line actually needs. More importantly, understanding how these two systems work together can help you avoid costly design mistakes and improve long-term operating efficiency.   They Remove Heat in Different Ways An Industrial Chiller is an active refrigeration system. It uses a compressor, evaporator, condenser and expansion valve to produce chilled water at a controlled temperature. That chilled water is then circulated through production equipment such as injection molds, chemical reactors, laser machines, electroplating lines or lithium battery manufacturing equipment.   A Cooling Tower works differently. It does not create chilled water. Instead, it removes heat from circulating water by allowing a small amount of water to evaporate into the atmosphere. Because of this principle, the outlet water temperature of a cooling tower is always influenced by the outdoor wet-bulb temperature.   Simply put: An Industrial Chiller produces chilled water. A Cooling Tower removes heat from warm water. Although they both contribute to industrial cooling, they perform completely different functions.   A Water-Cooled Chiller Always Works with a Cooling Tower One point that often causes confusion is the difference between air-cooled chillers and water-cooled chillers. An air-cooled industrial chiller is a self-contained unit. It dissipates heat through its condenser using ambient air, so it does not require a cooling tower. A water-cooled industrial chiller, however, cannot operate independently. It must work together with a cooling tower, condenser water pump, and the associated piping system.   In this configuration: The industrial chiller provides chilled water for the production equipment.  The cooling tower removes the condenser heat generated by the chiller. Together they form one complete cooling system.   Many customers compare water-cooled chillers directly with air-cooled chillers based only on the chiller itself. In reality, a water-cooled system should always be evaluated as a complete engineering solution rather than as a single piece of equipment.   Hengde Original Insight: A water-cooled chiller is not simply another type of chiller—it is part of an integrated cooling system. When planning a project, manufacturers should consider the cooling tower, pumps, piping, installation space, and water treatment together instead of evaluating only the chiller itself.   Stable Temperature Matters More Than Cooling Capacity When selecting cooling equipment, many buyers pay most attention to cooling capacity. However, in real manufacturing environments, temperature stability is often more important than maximum cooling capacity.   For example, plastic injection molding requires consistent mold temperatures to reduce dimensional variation and improve product quality. Chemical reactors depend on stable cooling to maintain reaction conditions, while lithium battery production demands precise temperature control during coating and drying processes.   A cooling tower can only cool water close to the ambient wet-bulb temperature, which changes with weather conditions.   An industrial chiller, however, can continuously maintain a preset water temperature regardless of seasonal temperature changes.   Hengde Original Insight:Manufacturers often compare cooling capacity first, but experienced engineers usually compare temperature stability. A stable cooling process generally produces fewer defects than a system with greater capacity but fluctuating temperatures.   They Are Often Partners Rather Than Competitors Many comparison articles present industrial chillers and cooling towers as competing products. In practice, this isn't always true. Large manufacturing facilities frequently install both systems. For example, a water-cooled screw chiller used in a plastics factory may rely on a cooling tower to remove condenser heat while simultaneously providing chilled water for injection molding machines.   Instead of replacing each other, they perform different jobs within the same cooling system.   Hengde Original Insight: In many industrial projects, the question isn't "Industrial chiller or cooling tower?" The better question is "Does my cooling system require both?"   Installation and Maintenance Installation requirements vary depending on the cooling method. Air-cooled industrial chillers are relatively simple to install because no cooling tower is required. This makes them suitable for factories with limited installation space or locations where water resources are limited.   Water-cooled chillers require additional equipment, including cooling towers, condenser water pumps, and circulating piping. Although installation is more complex, they generally provide higher efficiency for medium and large industrial cooling loads.   Cooling towers also require regular maintenance. Water treatment, scale prevention, corrosion control, and periodic cleaning are all essential for maintaining long-term cooling performance.   Ignoring water quality may reduce the efficiency of both the cooling tower and the industrial chiller connected to it.   Which System Is Right for Your Factory? The answer depends on your production requirements. If your production line requires precise temperature control, low-temperature cooling, or year-round stable operation, an Industrial Chiller is the preferred solution. If the objective is to reject condenser heat or cool circulating water close to ambient temperature in a central cooling system, a Cooling Tower is an essential component.   For many manufacturing facilities, especially those using water-cooled chillers, the best solution is a combination of both.   Hengde Original Insight:The biggest energy loss we see in industrial cooling is rarely caused by the chiller itself. More often, it comes from choosing the wrong cooling system or selecting equipment that doesn't match the actual production process.   How Hengde Can Help Hengde specializes in designing and manufacturing Industrial Chillers for production lines across a wide range of industries, including plastic injection molding, chemical processing, electroplating, laser equipment, food processing, and lithium battery manufacturing.   Our product range includes air-cooled chillers, water-cooled chillers, and customized industrial cooling systems. For customers requiring large cooling capacities, we also provide complete water-cooled chiller solutions designed to operate seamlessly with cooling towers, pumps, and auxiliary equipment.   Rather than simply recommending a standard model, our engineering team evaluates your cooling capacity, process temperature, installation conditions, factory layout, and future expansion plans to deliver the most suitable cooling solution for your production line.
  • What Size Industrial Chiller Do I Need? A Complete Sizing Guide Aug 12, 2026
Choosing the right size of an industrial chiller is not as simple as picking a model based on horsepower. A chiller that is too small may never reach the required water temperature, while a unit that is much larger than necessary can increase the purchase price and operating cost.   For manufacturers, the real question should be: How much heat does my production process actually need to remove? This is the starting point for selecting the right industrial chiller. Cooling Capacity Comes First Industrial chiller capacity is commonly expressed in kW, kcal/h, or tons of refrigeration (TR). The required capacity depends mainly on the amount of heat generated by the equipment and how quickly that heat needs to be removed.   For water-based cooling systems, a basic calculation can be made using water flow and temperature difference: Here, Q represents the approximate cooling load, F is the water flow rate, and ΔT is the temperature difference between the return and supply water.   This calculation provides a useful starting point, but it is not the whole story. Actual industrial chiller sizing also depends on ambient temperature, operating conditions, piping, pump performance, heat losses, and whether the equipment operates continuously.   Don't Choose a Chiller Based Only on Horsepower One of the most common mistakes we see is a customer saying, "I have a 100 HP machine, so I need a 100 HP chiller." There is no direct one-to-one relationship between equipment horsepower and chiller capacity.   Two machines with the same motor power can generate very different amounts of heat. The actual cooling requirement depends on the production process, load, cycle time, material, operating temperature, and how much heat is transferred into the cooling water.   This is particularly important in plastic injection molding, extrusion, chemical processing, and other applications where the cooling load can change significantly during production.   Hengde Insight: Horsepower tells you about the size of the production equipment, not necessarily the size of the cooling load. For chiller selection, process data is usually more valuable than simply knowing the machine's motor power.   Water Temperature Is Just as Important as Cooling Capacity A customer may know that they need a 50 kW chiller, but that information alone is still incomplete. The supplier should also know the required chilled-water temperature.   For example, producing 7°C water is considerably different from supplying 15°C or 20°C cooling water. The lower the target temperature, the more demanding the refrigeration system becomes.   It is also important to know the expected return-water temperature and required water flow rate. These values help the manufacturer determine whether the proposed industrial chiller can provide the required cooling performance under actual operating conditions. Don't Forget the Ambient Temperature For air-cooled industrial chillers, ambient temperature has a direct impact on refrigeration performance. A chiller operating in a factory where the summer temperature reaches 40°C faces very different conditions from the same model operating in a 25°C environment.   This is especially important for customers in hot regions such as Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and parts of South America.   Hengde Insight:A chiller model should not be judged only by its catalog cooling capacity. The more useful question is: At what ambient temperature and water temperature is that capacity achieved?   This is one reason why two suppliers can quote similar-sized chillers while offering different actual performance.   How Much Safety Margin Do You Need? Some additional capacity is normally sensible because production conditions are rarely perfectly stable. However, bigger is not always better.   A customer may add a very large safety margin because they are worried that the chiller will be insufficient. But an oversized industrial chiller can lead to higher initial costs and inefficient operation, particularly when the actual cooling load is much lower than the machine's rated capacity.   A reasonable reserve should be based on the application rather than an arbitrary percentage.   Hengde Insight: "Buy a bigger chiller just to be safe" is not always good engineering advice. A properly calculated chiller with a reasonable reserve is usually a better investment than a machine that is significantly oversized.   Air-Cooled or Water-Cooled? The cooling method should also be considered when selecting the chiller size. An air-cooled industrial chiller rejects heat directly to the surrounding air. It does not require a cooling tower, which makes installation relatively simple and suitable for many standalone production lines. A water-cooled industrial chiller uses cooling water to remove heat from the condenser. It must the refore work together with a cooling tower, condenser water pump, and associated piping.   For larger cooling loads, water-cooled systems can offer excellent efficiency, but the complete system—including the cooling tower and water treatment—should be considered when calculating the project cost.   For more details, please refer to this article by Hengde: Choosing Between Air Cooled And Water Cooled Chillers: Which One Is Right For You?   What Information Should You Give the Supplier? If you are requesting an industrial chiller quotation, providing the following information will make the selection much more accurate: Equipment or production process to be cooled Required cooling capacity, if known Required inlet and outlet water temperature Water flow rate Ambient temperature Indoor or outdoor installation Power supply: voltage, phase, and frequency Operating hours per day Number of machines requiring cooling   If you don't know the required cooling capacity, that's not necessarily a problem. A professional industrial chiller manufacturer should be able to estimate the load from your process information.   How Hengde Can Help Hengde specializes in industrial chiller solutions for production lines, providing air-cooled and water-cooled chillers for plastic processing, chemical production, electroplating, food processing, lithium battery manufacturing, and other industrial applications.   Our engineering team does not simply select a model according to horsepower. We look at the customer's actual process, required water temperature, flow rate, ambient conditions, and installation environment before recommending a suitable industrial chiller.   For customers who are unsure about the required size, providing the production equipment information and cooling requirements is usually enough for Hengde to make a preliminary assessment.   Final Thoughts There is no universal answer to the question, "What size industrial chiller do I need?" The correct size depends on the actual cooling load, required water temperature, flow rate, ambient conditions, and production process.   For buyers and engineers, the best approach is to give the chiller manufacturer complete process information rather than selecting a model simply by horsepower.   The goal is not to buy the biggest industrial chiller available. It is to choose a industrial chiller that can reliably handle the real cooling load while maintaining stable operation and reasonable energy consumption.
